Lifestyle as Medicine

Do you know what you need to do in order to become healthier but can’t seem to find the best way to achieve your aspirations? I can help! My goal is to help you better understand your objective and guide you towards sustainable solutions so that you can achieve and maintain your goals. During your private, personalized session, I will discuss prevention, health behavior change and biopsychosocial factors in regards to exercise, obesity, and chronic disease. By combining all these tools, you will have a better chance of succeeding and reaching your goals. 

There is a growing body of scientific evidence showing that lifestyle interventions can be as effective as medication but without the risks and unwanted side effects. Lifestyle Medicine is becoming the preferred modality for not only prevention but also the treatment of most chronic diseases including the following:

• Autoimmune
• Type-2 diabetes
• Coronary Heart Disease
• Hypertension
• Obesity
• Insulin Resistance Syndrome
• Osteoporosis
• Various types of cancer

Although Lifestyle Medicine incorporates many public health approaches, it is a clinical discipline. While Lifestyle Medicine does not typically emphasize prescription medications, they frequently require the reduction of prescribed medications. In some cases, medication is appropriate.

Dr. Joe will personally coordinate your treatment. He utilizes lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise, stress management and psychology in your treatment and management.

Behavioral Change

My goal is to help clarify your objective and guide you towards sustainable solutions. Health psychology addresses how to understand the biological, social, and psychological factors that influence your health and potential illnesses. Dr. Joe will discuss prevention, health behavior change, and biopsychosocial factors in regards to exercise, obesity, and chronic disease.

Dr. Joe is licensed with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (www.bbs.ca.gov) and is also a California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) member (www.camft.org).

He offers one-on-one, couples, family, and group sessions. I work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues providing services that span from therapy for depression and grief counseling to parenting support, couples counseling and beyond.  In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each of my client's individual needs to help attain the personal growth they’re striving for.Some common concerns that are presented in sessions are:

Nutrition 

Your success depends on how, what and when you eat. Dr. Joe provides you with personalized nutritional coaching to maximize your health and exercise programs. Each plan is built around your own lifestyle and has multiple components such as start-up, transition, weekly check-ins, and maintenance.  Dr. Joe encourages Lifestyle Change.  Dr. Joe wants to encourage moving away from the Diet culture into sustainable change.  

He believes that whole foods, mostly-plants, nutrient-dense foods should be a priority but realizes that not everyone is open to this recommendation. Below are some common nutritional plans.

Exercise
Dr. Joe has a unique approach to exercise, attributed to his Division 1 athletic background as well as tackling his own personal struggles. Training sessions and exercise prescriptions are personalized and developed based upon American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines. Common components integrated into prescriptions are risk appraisal, functional and isolative stretching, plyometrics, strength training, endurance training, cross-training and sport-specific programs.

As an athlete growing up, Dr. Joe was always interested in fitness. Nutrition became an integral component when he became an endurance athlete.

Dr. Joe currently trains clients both privately and in group settings. He also supervises and coaches other trainers in using proper body mechanics and techniques in order to prevent injury and strengthen problem areas. He currently provides tennis, cycling, swimming, running, and sport-specific training in addition to bootcamps for all ages, shapes and sizes.

As an ACSM member, Dr. Joe incorporates the following components into his training sessions:

• Sports Medicine

Dr. Joe will bring the exercise regimen to wherever you are.  Whether it be at the gym, outside, inside your home or at your work, Dr. Joe will ensure you get the necessary attention to get you on track to becoming healthier, stronger, leaner and more fit.

When consulting with a company the focus of the client must be clear.  I listen first  then lead your team toward a laser focus.  Many companies try to invest in multiple elements.  When the problem appears too complex operations are impacted.  I believe the first step is to identify the company strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
